The Association of Confessional Baptist Churches in the United Kingdom began the new year by
meeting in the historic building of its newest member, Trinity Baptist Church, in the village of
Charlesworth in the North Peaks, near Greater Manchester.
By now the life of the Association has adopted a familiar rhythm, which was repeated at this latest
meeting. The meeting opened with the singing of a Psalm and the moderator’s prayer. Pastor Eddie
Roberts of Stanley Park Church, Liverpool, gave a vigorous and spirited defence of the Scripture’s
doctrine of creation, as found in our Confession. Pastor Robert’s message was as humorous as it
was true, looking at the Trinity in creation, the totality of the creation, and the time of creation.
The churches shared news with one another, and it was interesting to observe the commonalities in
the reports. The churches reported growth and progress against the severe headwinds of
modernity, yet there is a dearth of men for eldership. It was also noted that there is an increasing
number of churches interested in our Association, who are observing for the time being to see how
things turn out. Our suggestion is, why observe history when you can make it? All Confessional
Baptist churches are welcome to attend and observe our meetings; and if they desire, to submit an
application to join.
After a hearty lunch which was kindly provided by the members of Trinity Baptist Church, the
meeting reconvened for prayer. Previously, the business meeting occupied the rest of the day,
however as the agenda was light, the first hour was dedicated to prayer. Despite Confessional
theology’s staid and dusty reputation, the prayer meeting was lively, melting away any notions of
our being the ‘frozen chosen’. The session overran, and the moderator struggled to bring the time to
a close.
Lastly, the Association made decisions on how to help its member churches who are struggling at
this time, how to promote the Association further, and on responding to news that a similar
endeavour has started in British Columbia.
Contrary to appearances, it is an exciting time to be a Christian in the UK. Now that our Association
has found its footing, we are ready to widen its work of theological retrieval across the nation.
